FI Innovations are one of New Zealand’s leading fibreglass, flooring, boat-building and flexible urethane specialists. We serve the needs of a diverse range of clients from heavy industry and civil infrastructure through architectural, agricultural and marine to vehicle and recreational markets throughout the lower South Island.

Bill McIntosh, Gareth Dykes’ grandfather, pioneered the use of fibreglass in Southland. He quickly saw the benefits of this new substance and developed his father’s company, T D McIntosh and Sons, into a successful fibreglass business.

In the 1990’s Gareth completed his fibreglass apprenticeship at his grandfather’s factory … and along the way picked up Bill’s pioneering spirit. So when Gareth returned to Southland in 2002 with his wife Melissa, after an extended overseas adventure, they accepted the opportunity to gradually take up the reins of the old family firm – adding 4th generation innovation to this long-established Invercargill business.

Initially making fibreglass decks/cabins for a local boat manufacturer, Stabicraft Marine, Gareth and Melissa steadily expanded the company, eventually re-branding as FI Innovations.

Commitment to excellence and customer service has seen FI Innovations succeed and grow. Recent recognition has included being “Supreme Winner” in the 2017 Southland Business Excellence awards and the "Innovation in Export" award at the 2018 Southland Export awards.

FI Innovations are among New Zealand’s leaders in composites and resin infusion.

Our technicians can custom make almost anything from fibreglass, carbon fibre or other exotic fibres as a one-off, short run or replica.

We love to customise new boats, as well as breathe life into older craft. We work with individual boat owners, large-scale manufacturers such as Stabicraft Marine and tourism fleet owners like Shotover Jet.

  • Manufacture fibreglass or exotic fibre hulls, decks and interior parts

  • Repairs including transom replacements, replace rotten floors/bearers, osmosis treatment, colour-matched gelcoat and re-spray hulls + decks

  • Hull protection, such as Carborundum keel strips and anti-fouling paint

  • Battery boxes, bait tanks, fish chillers and king/queen seat pedestals

Our two qualified boat builders construct or repair commercial wooden or fibreglass vessels. We regularly tackle jobs anywhere in Southland, Fiordland, Central Otago and Stewart Island.

Recent tasks include re-laying teak decks on the historic steamship Earnslaw, adding a hardtop to a private luxury launch, building a fish chiller in a fishing boat and an outboard power conversion on a jetboat.

Our specially-trained flooring staff can create an industrial, commercial, pool or domestic surface layer to suit your needs - decorative, functional, non-slip, durable or chemical-resistant.

We’re approved NZ applicators of a range of international industrial products, including Sika and Degadur flooring and Rhino Linings, so you’ll enjoy the full benefit of the manufacturer’s product warranty.

Flexible Urethane

Our skilled staff can create unique parts from urethane or silicone, such as specialist tool handles, bump pads and heated handrails. You’ll benefit from the shock-absorbing qualities and customisable flexibility/hardness.

Boat Decks/Cabins

“Since 2002 Stabicraft Marine has relied on FI Innovations to deliver moulded cabins, enabling us to add stylish good looks to our range of open boats.

Their quality workmanship and excellent customer support can’t be faulted.  It’s what makes FI Innovations such all-round good operators.”

- Paul Adams, Managing Director Stabicraft Marine Invercargill

Aviation parts

“I’m installing a modern diesel engine into a Fletcher agricultural aircraft.

FI Innovations custom-built a lightweight engine cowling in fire-resistant carbon-kevlar composite. It was rigid enough to need no internal bracing. The air ducts were accurately made and easy-to-fit.

I have no hesitation in recommending Gareth and his crew at FI Innovations.  They accommodated my requirements with no fuss and produced an engine cowling I can be proud of.”
